Chapel of Bones, Portugal, Evora -a little dark tourism-

by Ada@

EN: What you will think if I tried a new type of travel story. Is it dark, creepy, weird, mind thinking, and maybe scary? A chapel of bones, quite odd, but with a history behind that perhaps will change the way you see things at first sight.

Did you think places like this exits? You can find it in many countries: Poland, Malta, Italy, Prague, etc. I have to admit this is one of my creepiest places that I visit so far. This small chapel is giving me goosebumps even now!

EN: “Capela dos Ossos” in Portugal language or Chapel of Bones is located in Sao Francisco Church in Evora and is one popular monument. This article is quite different from what I usually write, but I challenge you to have enough courage to visit it!

EN: Its history goes back to the 16th century when it is said that in the Evora region were around 42 cemeteries, which was quite inconvenient for some people who desired another land scope. Also, some stories are saying that people were forced to exhumed people to bury others because of no space, so the Franciscan monks came with this “bizarre” idea. This chapel’s purpose and goal weren’t to scare people but were to resolve areas and remind the people of the notion of the material world’s temporality.

EN: You are welcomed with a strong phrase that explains what you will expect to see inside: ” Nos ossos que aqui estamos, pelos vossos esperamos” which can be translated: ” We bones that here stay wait for yours” extremely explicit and with such powerful meaning!

EN: Approximated that over 5.000 dead bodies that “decorated” the walls with their bones, skulls, and even 2 full bodies hanging from the wall. A strong image, isn’t it?

O imagine dura, nu-i asa?

EN: So what do you think, you will be brave enough to visit this?
